NO BORDER LINE

Artist Statement - Contemporary Artist Shintaro Inoue

From childhood, I learned calligraphy from my mother, who was a calligraphy master, developing a profound fascination with lines that transcend written characters. Even when walking around the city, I was conscious of lines in everything I saw, and I was amazed at the way the lines and colors that were all around me mixed together in an ever-changing way, yet still maintained their own harmony. In art history, I observed that while Western culture captures subjects through "surfaces," Eastern culture, including Japan, is a culture of "lines" that can be applied even to invisible elements like air and the flow of time. Inheriting this profound culture and artistic context of lines, I call my artistic expression "NO BORDER LINE" and pursue further possibilities for line expression. Through varied lines and luminous colors, I captures the ephemeral vital energy of women living in the present. Those lines and colors are based on each individual's individuality, and they recognize each other's thoughts and differences, and are not something that can be divided by lines or colors, which is why so many things are made up. Conflicts between nations are intensifying in the world today, but national borders are not lines that divide countries; rather, I hope that people all over the world will respect each other by recognizing each other's individuality and coexisting as "NO BORDER LINES."
